The BMJ Group’s mission to improve access to evidence based medicine for doctors around the world comes a step closer as a result of new agreements in Germany and New Zealand.

The BMJ Group has signed a three year nationwide licensing agreement with the Bavarian State Library on behalf of the German research foundation, Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG,) to provide BMJ Journals’ content to universities and other publicly financed research institutions across Germany.

The initiative will improve access to online medical resources for 124 universities, medical schools, research institutes and academic libraries throughout Germany. The BMJ Journals’ content has been available in Germany since January 2008.

Dr Johannes Fournier, Programme Director of the Scientific Library Services and Information Systems Division of DFG comments:

“We are very pleased with the constructive manner in which the library and publishing communities worked together and helped us provide a valuable resource for all German medical and life scientists.”

In a further development, The Royal New Zealand College of General Practitioners (RNZCGP) have purchased a customised online version of BMJ Learning.

The initiative provides over 3000 New Zealand GPs with access to online learning resources based on the best available peer reviewed evidence.

The site will provide a wide range of learning resources that deal with everyday issues in primary care, general practice and hospital medicine, including interactive case histories to test consultation skills and up to date clinical information on common conditions.

BMJ Learning currently offers over 400 evidence-based learning modules with another 200 to be added in 2008. The site will be customised with the College adding New Zealand specific assessment and curriculum modules.

Dr Jonathan Fox, President of the College said:

“Every GP is committed to lifelong learning, but the pace of life is now so intense that the chance to access such quality medical education from your desk, or from home, is compelling.”

Stella Dutton, CEO of the BMJ Group said:

“These contracts emphasise the increasing international presence of the BMJ Group. Currently, over half of our products and services are used by doctors and patients overseas”.

About BMJ Group
BMJ Group is one of the world’s leading providers of trusted medical information for healthcare professionals and patients. BMJ Group publishes BMJ (British Medical Journal), over 20 specialist journals, BMJ Clinical Evidence and BMJ Best Treatments (currently available in the UK from AskBoots.com).

The market for on-train WiFi services is finally starting to take off. Major European, US and Asian operators are rapidly following the UK’s lead and introducing on-board, high-speed wireless internet connections for their passengers. Against this background and with a host of new services rapidly emerging all over the world, the third annual WiFi on Train Conference is set for a record turn-out.

Train Communications 2008, hosted by technology consultancy BWCS in London next month, will see train companies from across the globe meeting up to discuss the latest developments in this fast-moving market.

As Graham Wilde, CEO of BWCS, put it, “This year there has been an unprecedented number of new services and trials launched. From the West Coast of America, to India and Australia, we are seeing more interest than ever in these on-board WiFi systems.” He went on “train companies are fired up by a heady combination of introducing cost-saving applications for their own operations and adding new, income-generating, entertainment services for their passengers.”

BWCS, which has worked with many of the leading operators on the development and procurement of WiFi on train services will host a series of presentations by the leading rail companies on the 11th and 12th of June.

Wilde reflected that almost every train operator worth its salt will be at the conference, either presenting or attending. “We feel this is a great opportunity for all of us to learn from their successes and occasional failures, as well as to hear reports on progress from trials of new systems and services - straight from the horses’ mouths.”

Among those presenting at Train Communications Systems 2008 will be: SNCF, SJ, Trains (Sweden), Deutsche Bahn, Danish Rail, Nokia Siemens Networks, Lloyd’s Register Rail, NS Trains, Parsons Corporation, Icomera, WiFi Rail, Nomad Digital and many more.

Over two days, a combination of interactive workshops, panel sessions, presentations and networking sessions will explore the commercial and technical issues arising from the deployment of train WiFi around the world as well as other newer applications developed as wireless broadband on trains becomes a reality. Train Communications 2008 will be held in central London on the 11th and 12th of June 2008.

The conference is sponsored by Nokia Siemens Networks, Icomera, InfoGlobal and Lloyd’s Register Rail with lunches sponsored by Nomad Digital. 21Net is sponsoring a cocktail event at the end of the first day.

Full details are available on the website www.TrainComms2008.com or e-mail Ross.Parsons@BWCS.com if you have any questions.

Replify’s all-software based solutions now result in vastly faster network applications and file download

Belfast, Northern Ireland – Replify - http://www.replify.com - the WAN optimization and application acceleration software firm today announced a new bi-directional network caching technology that results in a massive reduction in file transfer time over wide area networks.

Replify has now embedded its latest cross-protocol data reduction technology (XDR) in its Reptor application acceleration solution. XDR means that identical or updated blocks of data will be sent only as references across network connections. From the remote network user perspective this results in vastly improved download times and performance increases by orders of magnitude over 2,000 times – depending on the specific applications.

Replify launched its Reptor server-side virtual appliance, branch office and client suite of products earlier in the year. The announcement that the Reptor solution now embraces its latest bi-directional network caching along with data reduction technology means that Replify’s solution offers significantly increased performance and implementation benefits to customers compared to current hardware based offerings. Virtualization also means that Replify’s solution is available at a very attractive, per-seat, price point.

According to Kevin Donaghy, CEO of Replify, “Our software-based approach obviates the need for capital intensive, high maintenance hardware, meaning that the solution is substantially more attractive for corporate decision-makers. As we develop more ways of freeing up network resource and accelerating applications, new features can be easily and immediately available as software upgrades. With hardware based solutions new product features take much longer to make it to the user base. Our XDR technology is a case in point. It’s already in our evaluation software and is available for download today.”

Wesley Darlington, Replify’s CTO, explains that XDR is yet another important milestone in the Reptor product development. “Our intention in developing the Reptor suite was to make application acceleration more available and more powerful. To date, WAN optimization and application acceleration has not been made universally available in many companies that have adopted it. This is because hardware solutions don’t scale that well and are expensive. Our approach is simpler. We make available an enterprise instance of our solution meaning that everyone in the company can have faster apps across the VPN. So as we roll out new technologies like XDR it ripples across the organisation – from the data centre to branch office to mobile user. Today we’re seeing hundreds of times performance improvement; but we’re not stopping there and as we squeeze more and more performance out of the network everyone benefits.”

Replify’s virtual appliance and client-side software, incorporating XDR bi-directional data reduction technology, is available to download for trial today. Network managers can see for themselves the improvements that can be achieved through Replify’s Reptor solution by visiting http://www.replify.com/downloads/

About Replify
Replify was founded in 2007 and is headquartered in Belfast, Northern Ireland. The company’s objective was to be the first to develop an all-software based WAN optimisation solution that would exceed hardware based performance. The Replify principal management team has gained considerable experience developing and bringing to market WAN optimisation products at both Swan Labs and F5 Networks. Now the team is focusing on the next generation of WAN optimisation and intends to make Replify a global player in software solutions.

Centrica expected to reduce application maintenance costs by 50%

Fujitsu Services, one of Europe’s leading IT services companies, today announced a £2.1 million outsourcing contract for the next 3 years with Centrica. The new contract is to manage a portfolio of applications supporting British Gas’s residential and business customers. Under the terms of the contract Fujitsu will provide 365×24 application maintenance and support services.

As part of the contract Fujitsu will provide Centrica with an Applications Value Assessment, a unique Fujitsu approach that enables a company to identify the relative value and viability of its applications. The approach uses portfolio management techniques and tools to optimise the support and maintenance service. For example, applications that are identified as being mature; delivering high but declining value would be re-designed to run at lower costs or replaced. This approach typically leads to cost reductions of between 10 and 20%.

The agreement comes as part of the latest chapter in a 30 year history in supporting Centrica and enhancing its IT systems. The applications managed by Fujitsu operate on a wide range of technologies, including VMS, UNIX, Visual Basic and Windows, and are all legacy systems requiring specialist technical skills. Centrica expect to reduce their application maintenance costs in this area by 50% with the support of Fujitsu.

Neil Coop, senior commercial manager, Centrica, says, “We are delighted to have appointed Fujitsu to continue to help us modernise our legacy systems using its extensive skills and resources in application management and development. In its 30 year relationship with Centrica Fujitsu has been responsible for providing a broad range of solutions and services, using its comprehensive range of business and technical skills. In the process, Fujitsu’s employees have amassed years of experience and knowledge of both Centrica’s energy business and its underlying technology.”

Anne Stokes, business unit director for Fujitsu Services commented “Centrica is taking a far sighted look at its applications portfolio and planning for the future. Centrica will take better informed decisions on the evolution of its applications and ensure they are properly aligned with their business strategy. Fujitsu Services is proud to be helping one of our most valued clients to drive its strategic goals in this way.”

About Fujitsu Services

Luxembourg – MACH the provider of effective and reliable business processes to optimise roaming profitability, today announced that the MTN Group has exclusively signed a Framework Agreement with MACH to cover its operations in the Middle East and Africa.

Headquartered in South Africa, the MTN Group is a leading provider of communications services offering cellular network access and business solutions to over 68 million subscribers in 21 countries throughout MEA. MTN is already a MACH client, however this is the first time a Group agreement has been made. MTN Yemen will also migrate to MACH as a new customer during 2008.

Sifiso Dabengwa, COO MTN Group says: “The MTN Group recognises the quality of MACH’s product portfolio and their reputation. MACH’s local support, knowledge and understanding of MTN’s business were among the considerations in MTN’s decision to commit to and formalise the business relationship with MACH.”

The MEA region is experiencing a period of consolidation. Therefore it was essential for the MTN Group to have one trusted partner to help them deliver their vision. Different parts of the region are experiencing varying stages of market penetration - the Middle East, with more than 60%, is thereby seeking to build on existing business through expansion with new technologies. Africa has around 31% market penetration with year on year GSM connections growth predicted to be a similar percentage, and is enjoying its status as a significant emerging market.

Terence Ledger, CCO MACH comments: “MACH offers niche expertise at a regional level combined with a global perspective. We have an unmatched track record and complementary portfolio of services that will prepare, equip and optimise the whole of the MTN Group throughout all stages of the roaming lifecycle. and location based services

Paris, France and Espoo, Finland - Orange and Nokia today announced a strategic international partnership, extending the first agreement signed by the two companies in February 2008. The two industry leaders have committed to a three year partnership, which will include the addition of ten new Nokia handsets to the Orange Signature range and the addition of music to a combined offer of games, advertising, maps and location based services.

Orange and Nokia have agreed to launch a suite of integrated multimedia services on the new Nokia handsets, launching in H208 across nine major markets, in an initiative designed to boost the adoption of mobile digital entertainment. As part of the strategic partnership, customers will have direct access to the Orange Music Store, both Orange and NGage games, as well as Nokia Maps. Under the Orange Signature programme, all services will be integrated into the familiar Orange user interface, providing one click access to information and entertainment.

“This collaboration underlines Orange’s drive to create strategic partnerships that will give customers the best possible mobile multimedia experience in the simplest way,” said Olaf Swantee, EVP of Orange’s Personal Communications Services. “Combined with our leadership in mobile multimedia innovation and relationships with leading content providers, Orange believes that Nokia’s devices and Ovi platform will make a powerful environment for the provision of a joint range of services,” added Georges Penalver, EVP of Orange’s Group Strategic Marketing.

“We are pleased to create this strategic partnership with Orange and believe that the combination of Signature and Ovi services will extend and enrich consumer choice,” said Kai Öistämö, EVP, Devices, Nokia. “We also expect our close collaboration to extend beyond the initial focus areas of music, games, maps and advertising to include other services over time.”

Under the agreement, the two companies will work jointly on marketing to support the launch of new devices and the development of multimedia applications. For instance, Nokia’s Mobile Maps platform and GPS technology will be introduced to a wide portfolio of Nokia handsets in the Orange Signature range, allowing for navigation, location based search and advertising services. The two companies plan to create 10 million active Mobile Maps users on Nokia devices within the Orange footprint by 2010.

Kitting out a bachelor pad with top-rated ‘boys-toys’ costs almost £5,000, according to research.

Huge plasma televisions, top of the range laptops, games consoles, high-end stereos with surround speakers and other gadgets put the bill up to £4,678.97.

The cost emerged in a study by online review site www.reevoo.com which named the 15 must-have items for any self-respecting bachelor.

Among the items to appear on the list is a Panasonic 50 inch HD ready plasma screen TV worth £1,351 and the Hewlett Packard Pavilion DV9605 laptop for £699.

Unsurprisingly the living room is home to the most electronic devices.

Chris Winstanley of reevoo.com said: ”Bachelors love to fill their pads with up-to-date technology and appliances. But five grand is a lot of money and it makes sense to do your homework before you buy.

“It’s not surprising that 4 out of 5 men say they are influenced by impartial customer reviews – they give you the real-world comments that you’ll never get on the High Street.

Most of the items on the list help the average bachelor lead an uncomplicated lifestyle - with entertainment, food and drinks at the ready.

The bachelor’s living room should have a Proline TTR 65 P mini fridge - ensuring cold beers are no more than a stretch away. The Miele G1222SC dishwasher is also a must as no self-respecting bachelor should get involved in washing up.

Other top-rated electronic items include the Xbox 360 Elite games console, Wharfedale Diamond 9.1 bookshelf speakers and Denon D-m 35 DAB hi-fi mini system.

The full list of bachelor pad items rated highly by reviewers includes:

Panasonic TH50PZ70B 50 inch HD ready plasma screen TV £1,351.00
Xbox 360 Elite games console £250.00
Panasonic FZ50 digital camera £306.00
Sony DCR-SR 32E handycam camcorder with 30GB hard drive £259.00
Blackberry Curve 8310 mobile phone £274.99
Denon D-m 35 DAB hi-fi mini system £150.00
Apple iPod touch 16GB black £229.00
Wharfedale Diamond 9.1 bookshelf speakers £129.00
Hewlett Packard Pavilion DV9605 laptop £699.99
Pure Talksport DAB radio £40.00
Proline TTR 65 P mini fridge £69.99
Philips HD7810/60 Coffee Machine £50
Miele G1222SC dishwasher £493.00
Philips HQ8150 electric shaver £78.00
Sony RDR-HX510 DVD Recorder £299.00

Chris Winstanley added: ”We’ve gleaned this information from reviews on the Reevoo website. Having read thousands of reviews, it’s clear that electrical items are as important to men as handbags are to women.”

About Reevoo

Amsterdam, The Netherlands - GyPSii, the leading geo-location and mobile social networking provider, today announced it has entered into a map licensing agreement with NAV2, a Shanghai-based provider of world class digital map data. The deal means GyPSii users will have complete access to NAV2’s comprehensive China map database.

The database will play a crucial part in the roll-out of the GyPSii service across China. The licensed map database contains coverage of more than 980 cities and more than five million local points of interest (POIs), meaning users will have access to the country’s most up-to-date map database and a wealth of local content relevant to the Chinese market.

GyPSii has recently boosted its infrastructure in China with the opening of a Data Centre in Shanghai and a major partnership announcement with China Unicom and Shanghai Rannuo to launch GyPSii during the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing. GyPSii has also been made available to members of the Dopod Club, the exclusive online community for Dopod device users in China.

“Our strategy has always been to provide GyPSii users with the best possible user-experience on a local and global scale. The availability of Nav2’s map database on GyPSii is proof of our commitment to enabling Chinese users to take full advantage of the unique location aspect of our application” said Dan Harple, CEO at GyPSii. “GyPSii is the first and only social networking offering of its kind available in China and our success in China to date shows our ability to scale quickly in different regions around the world.”

“Location based services and social networking are the future of mobile.” said George Qie, General Manager of NAV2. “We are delighted to have licensed the map database to GyPSii and allow Chinese users unrivalled access to this new mobile experience. This year’s Beijing Olympic Games represent a momentous occasion for China, and the GyPSii application will enhance the whole Olympic experience for both the Chinese public and visitors to the country. Fans, media and athletes, will now have unrivalled access to key location information and POIs throughout the event.”

Dr Carl Sun, Chairman of NAV2 added: “The China map database is a powerful resource that until now has been used purely for personal navigation, automotive navigation, and GIS and Fleet management. We are excited to be working with GyPSii and its partners across China to reach the mass consumer market and enable wide scale use of our database to facilitate social networking activities on the mobile.”

About GyPSii
GyPSii is the market-leading mobile lifestyle application, connecting people, places and communities across networks and devices.
