UK Government the first to announce membership

Morristown, NJ – The TM Forum announced today that it has been working with the UK Government to establish a new industry program aimed at serving the procurement needs of large-scale end-user organizations. These buyers purchase IT and communications technology on a scale equivalent to many service providers and as such many of the Forum’s standards and guidelines and best practices are directly applicable.

The TM Forum has traditionally mainly served the needs of the telecom industry. However, with growing convergence of technologies spurring a major change in the demarcation lines between telecom, cable, media and web players that position is changing very quickly. The same underlying driver, technology convergence, is also changing the picture for many large-scale consumers of communications and IT technologies. No longer are these separate strands of their procurement requirements, the needs for an integrated procurement approach are rising with the advent of convergent approaches such as: Service Oriented computing architectures (SOA), all IP networking, and advanced Service Delivery Platforms.

The needs of large scale service providers are becoming indistinguishable from the needs of large-scale users such as government departments, defense industries, aerospace and financial services industries.

Andrew Bull Head of Infrastructure, Strategy and Architecture for the UK’s Revenue and Customs departments commented “We need to ensure the best value for money for UK taxpayers in our investments in IT and communications. Following international standards is one of the ways we can do that and we are delighted to be trail-blazing a new approach to working with an international trade association like the TM Forum. We hope other governments and large scale buyers will follow our lead.”

Martin Creaner, TM Forum President said “This is a natural extension of our work with service providers around the world - convergence is making the needs of users and service providers ever more aligned. Standards allow economies of scale that these ultra large buyers want to tap into. We are delighted to establish a new program aimed at meeting these needs.” The new program is expected to focus on ensuring that clear procurement guides can be developed to help large-scale buyers drive to standards in their procurements and market education.”

An initial meeting to launch the “Large Scale Buyers” program is going to be held at the TM Forum Management World, in Nice on the 21st at 1pm in the Euterpe room. The meeting is Open to all conference attendees.

About the TM Forum
With almost 700 members in 72 countries, the TM Forum is the world’s leading trade association focused on management of information, communications and entertainment services. The Forum provides leadership, strategic guidance and practical solutions to improve the way that services are created, delivered, assured and charged. Members include the majority of the world’s service providers, network operators, software suppliers, equipment suppliers and systems integrators.

The Forum currently facilitates over 80 technical programs and provides extensive training, conferencing and information services to its members. Through its initiatives to help providers move to 21st century ‘lean’ processes, the Forum helps its members automate business processes by deploying operational systems that will work seamlessly across various parts of the service delivery chain. The organization provides industry benchmarks, guidebooks, process and software frameworks and specific ‘plug and play’ standards. These give service providers the direction and specific roadmaps to achieve much greater business efficiency and operational flexibility.

Pacific Northwest Publishing and Safe & Civil Schools choose Microsoft technology to improve data accuracy and expand marketing opportunities.

REDMOND, Wash. — Microsoft Corp. today announced that Pacific Northwest Publishing and its affiliate company, Safe & Civil Schools, both of Eugene, Ore., have chosen Microsoft Dynamics CRM 4.0 and Microsoft Dynamics GP 10.0 to integrate their accounting, scheduling, customer service and marketing capabilities. The Microsoft Dynamics solutions will replace the organizations’ Intuit QuickBooks software and a paper-based system that had been augmented by electronic spreadsheets. Safe & Civil Schools provides behavior-management training to improve school safety and climate in school districts nationwide; Pacific Northwest Publishing publishes books and other materials used in the program and sold separately.

Microsoft Dynamics CRM provides powerful, role-based customer relationship management capabilities through models that can be deployed online or on premises, or be partner-hosted. The companies will use it to expand their marketing efforts and to automate their previous paper-based systems for tracking projects with school districts. Microsoft Dynamics GP is a complete and scalable business management solution that helps growing and midsize organizations get up and running quickly, with such features as business intelligence, reporting, budgeting and forecasting. This solution will integrate the companies’ accounting functions and replace the QuickBooks Enterprise Solutions software.

Pacific Northwest Publishing and Safe & Civil Schools are working closely with two Microsoft Gold Certified Partners: Gateway Solutions Inc., of Portland, Ore., will implement the Microsoft Dynamics CRM solution, and Borek Business Solutions of Eugene will implement Microsoft Dynamics GP. These new systems will be integrated with each other and with the organization’s current Microsoft Office suite.

The organizations work with school districts throughout the United States, including six of the 20 largest districts; much of the scheduling of training and consulting sessions has been handled by one person with her own paper-based file system and intricate electronic spreadsheets. Pacific Northwest Publishing and Safe & Civil Schools were looking for a way to automate these processes in order to ensure they would continue to meet customer needs promptly.

Pacific Northwest Publishing and Safe & Civil Schools selected Microsoft Dynamics technology after evaluating several other solutions, including NetSuite, Intacct and ACT! by Sage.

“We chose Microsoft Dynamics because it offered the best technology for our project scheduling and enabled integration between our two companies,” said Matt Sprick, chief operating officer of Pacific Northwest Publishing. “We were very impressed by how Microsoft Dynamics is able to adapt to our way of doing business.”

The organizations expect that their Microsoft Dynamics CRM and Microsoft Dynamics GP technology will produce a number of key benefits to support their operations, including the following:
• Company growth. “We’re looking to allow growth without breaking our system,” Sprick explained. The previous system was unable to bring together the large amounts of data needed for the companies to expand. The Microsoft technology integrates that data, making it available in a powerful fashion.
• Improved data accuracy. With their previous system, Pacific Northwest Publishing and Safe & Civil Schools needed to enter the same information four or five times to record schedules, expenses, bills and invoices. Now data can be entered just once, reducing the chances of input error, and it becomes available for all accounting and operational functions.
• Better tracking of time and expenses. Pacific Northwest Publishing will be able to track its inventory more easily and thoroughly than it could before, and to manage projects better by tracking the time and expenses involved in getting its books to market. Safe & Civil Schools will be able to do a better job of tracking expenses related to each consulting job.
• Improved revenue. Microsoft Dynamics CRM will allow the organizations to organize marketing campaigns that are more focused than before. The solution will allow the publishing company to directly market books to individuals who have attended training; in turn, it enables the training company to offer sessions only to those who have bought its books. Workflows will be built to take advantage of these opportunities. The technology also will support the organization in tracking products and services customers have used so that it can show customers logical services that complement and expand the improvement they have begun.
• Improved business intelligence. For the first time, the organizations will be able to see the true profitability of long-term projects by aligning costs with revenue. Safe & Civil Schools also anticipates that Microsoft Dynamics GP will allow it to prepare better projections of the ultimate profit on a project at various stages of its completion. Also, Pacific Northwest Publishing will be able to initiate inventory reporting for its books, improving its ability to manage costs and delivery.
• Better project scheduling and planning. As the corps of consultants expands, Microsoft Dynamics CRM will provide a complete — and previously unattainable — view of any number of consultants. With this view, planners can determine who is available for engagements. The new technology also will provide information on which consultants are associated with each school project and the stage of each project. Moreover, these new capabilities can be implemented promptly and cost-effectively because only minimal training is required, because Microsoft Dynamics CRM employs the familiar Microsoft Office Outlook interface.
• Better financial insight. The accounting department will be able to keep separate income statements and balance sheets for each of the two companies but also consolidate them in reports. Since most customers work with both companies, and the organizations will be able to track revenues and expenses by customer, the integrated data will provide a more holistic view of the organization’s customer relationships, profitability and potential than its previous methodologies could.
• Supply-chain management benefits. Most publication projects need to be sent out for bidding individually, because paper prices fluctuate. With the integration of all bidding and contract data in Microsoft Dynamics CRM and Microsoft Dynamics GP, Pacific Northwest Publishing can track the vendors for each of its products and determine which printers have the right equipment to run specific jobs, as well as maintain a history of where various jobs have been printed in the past.

“These two Microsoft Dynamics solutions provide us with a strong and comprehensive foundation for continued growth,” Sprick said. “They will scale with our business as we expand our market.”

“Corporations with multiple companies, business units or locations find exceptional value in Microsoft Dynamics solutions,” said Michael Park, corporate vice president for the Microsoft Dynamics business in the U.S. for Microsoft. “By integrating data within and across the organization, Microsoft Dynamics technologies provide greater visibility and business intelligence for superior planning and business management.”

About Safe & Civil Schools and Pacific Northwest Publishing

Based on Dr. Randy Sprick’s 30+ years in education and behavior management, Safe & Civil Schools offers a full range of consulting, training, workshop, and coaching services designed to assist all school personnel in implementing research-based strategies to structure all school settings for success.

In the effort to improve school climate and culture, Pacific Northwest Publishing is dedicated to producing practical, high-quality, research-based books and programs to help educators create positive, productive environments where children feel emotionally and physically safe, and as such, actively engaged in the learning process.

Innovative offering delivers partner expertise to help customers optimize value of Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 platform.

REDMOND, Wash. — Beginning today, customers of Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 with a qualified Volume Licensing Software Assurance enrollment can benefit from SharePoint Deployment Planning Services (SDPS), a new, partner-delivered offering designed to help customers successfully plan their deployment of SharePoint. Microsoft Corp., which is now concluding a pilot of SDPS, developed the offering in response to the remarkable reception and growth of SharePoint, the robust, multifaceted productivity platform.

“Customers told us they got the most out of SharePoint when they brought in a SharePoint Certified Consultant in the early stages to help with deployment planning,” said Tom Rizzo, director of SharePoint at Microsoft. “SDPS is a great matchup between our customers and our partners, because the customers win twice: They get deployment planning to help ensure the best possible results on the SharePoint platform, but also an added value for their investment in Software Assurance.”

“The SDPS engagement put us ahead of the game,” said Dorothy A. Chuday, senior policy analyst at the Internal Revenue Service. “We are learning how to use the technology and actually building a solution using the program. We now have a demo to show to the rest of our business units, making it easier for others to see the value.”

SDPS introduces a host of new knowledge offerings to the SharePoint partner community for customers’ benefit. These tools include SharePoint Deployment Plan Templates, Architecture Design Guidance Documents, and SharePoint server farm deployment guidance.

Microsoft partners that currently have Microsoft Competencies in Information Worker Portals and Collaboration, Enterprise Content Management, or Search specializations can now advance their skills and become certified to participate in the SDPS offering.

Leading shopping search site offers users fast response and uninterrupted access with help of F5 Acopia system

London – F5 Networks, Inc. (NASDAQ: FFIV), the global leader in Application Delivery Networking, today announced that Shopzilla, the leading shopping search site, has deployed F5 Acopia ARX intelligent file virtualisation systems as the foundation of its file storage management strategy. Shopzilla is leveraging the F5 Acopia ARX system’s unrivalled data migration, global namespace, and data replication capabilities in order to maintain fast response times and uninterrupted access for its more than 20 million unique visitors each month.

Faced with a major network-attached storage (NAS) upgrade spanning multiple vendor platforms, Shopzilla utilised the F5 Acopia ARX system to migrate files without incurring downtime and without the need to manually reconfigure client systems and applications. Once installed, Shopzilla’s VP, Technology, Burzin Engineer, recognized that the ARX system could help the company meet additional challenges, and Shopzilla began utilising the F5 Acopia ARX system for its global namespace capabilities and data replication as well.

“Every day Shopzilla helps millions of customers find virtually everything for sale on the web, at the best price, with the click of a mouse,” said Engineer. “We also operate BizRate, which collects more than one million new consumer reviews of stores and products each month. Needless to say, our data storage requirements are immense. We recently underwent a significant data migration initiative with the goal of upgrading our NAS systems to store our most critical files, while retaining the lower performing systems for less accessed, less critical data. Anyone that has been through this process knows how complicated, time-consuming, and resource draining it can be. However, by leveraging the F5 Acopia ARX solution and its global namespace capabilities, we were able to easily view and access all our files regardless of where the data was located or what operating system was supporting it.”

Today Shopzilla uses the F5 Acopia ARX systems’ global namespace capabilities to mask the complexity of the physical file server environment underlying Shopzilla’s websites, as well optimise the performance for its millions of web visitors. Additionally, the ARX systems’ data replication capabilities enable Shopzilla to replicate files across heterogeneous storage devices—meaning replicas do not have to reside on the same type of storage device as the source files. These replicas can be accessed in a read-only fashion to ensure availability, but can also be quickly promoted to a read/write status in the event of a failure, data loss, or disaster.

Engineer concluded, “Bottom line, the F5 Acopia ARX system has allowed us to maintain the outstanding user experience our shoppers have come to expect, while controlling costs and dramatically improving ROI.”

“Shopzilla operates an enterprise data centre that rivals the largest and most sophisticated data centres in the world,” said Christopher Lynch, SVP of Data Solutions at F5. “With F5 Acopia, Shopzilla is recognising dramatic savings in both capital expenditures and operational expense while improving service levels and throughput. We are proud to add this exciting company to our impressive group of enthusiastic enterprise customers.”

London - Wicked Uncle, the specialist toy e-tailer aimed at adults who struggle to buy children’s presents, has released the findings from a study into Great British present buying habits and perceptions around children’s gifts.

The study found that just over a third of us only buy presents for people that we deem likely to give a gift reciprocally. Furthermore a third of UK adults admit to feeling intensely and unfairly pressured into buying gifts for their nieces and nephews.

Purchasing gifts for children within families remains a hot topic and source of antagonism for many. Over three quarters of all those surveyed admitting to forgetting a child’s birthday.

Michael O’Shea, founder of Wicked Uncle says: “The problem of deciding what to buy for a child is huge. Making the wrong decision can cause all sorts of outcomes and lead to fraught family relations. Our study found that half of all presents for children are bought within a week of being given and a whopping one in three buy on the day or day before – so the possible margin for error is huge.”

The survey went on to analyse reactions to a ‘bad present choice’ as observed by those presenting the gift. 30% of kids burst into tears on receiving an unwanted present, 18% give the sulky silent treatment and 28% throw a temper tantrum. This left a mere 14% that showed no interest in the gift at all - with 10% believing the child would use the bad gift as a future bargaining tool.

It appears that Brits remain divided when it comes to making excuses for forgetting a child’s birthday. Nearly half of us (48%) confess to using the staple excuse ‘I’ve been too busy at work’. Whereas 40% claim there is absolutely no excuse for missing a child’s birthday and it’s totally unacceptable. Less popular excuses include; illness (5%), travel (3%), lack of love (1%)! and unannounced surprise parties (1%).

The report also looked at the social pressures surrounding present buying versus growing commercialisation within the UK. 56% of UK adults feel that media hype and aggressive corporate marketing campaigns are collectively leading to an erosion of childhood. Over two thirds (68%) stated that they feel under immense pressure to spend more on a child’s present year on year.

However, when questioned it transpires that half of all presents bought for children are still under £20.00 in value. In contrast to this 1-in-5 respondents state that £10.00 is sufficient budget in the present buying stakes.

Third book aimed at systems developers of new generation systems released.

Nice, France, Management World – TM Forum, the world’s leading trade association focused on management of communications, information and entertainment services, today announced the publication of a new reference book aimed at integrating systems applications. Written by John Reilly, at the TM Forum and John Wilmes, of Progress Software, this is the latest in a series that describes how to adopt and apply the TM Forum’s New Generation Operations Systems and Software (NGOSS) program.

At the heart of NGOSS is the TM Forum’s Information Framework which provides the information/data reference model and a common information/data vocabulary essential for integration of systems. Commonly referred to as the Shared Information and Data model (SID) it is widely used across industry. The new book, “Application Integration Using the SID” provides an introduction to application integration frameworks and how to use the TM Forum Information Framework within that context. It provides detailed, step-by-step guidance on scoping, analyzing and designing BSS/OSS integration projects that leverage NGOSS frameworks and integration tools for data interoperability. Topics covered include:

• Introduction to application integration frameworks
• Process steps for employing the SID within an integration framework
• SID-based contracts, services and APIs
• Tool support for SID-based integration frameworks
• Real-world case studies

The book explains to readers how to use the TM Forum Information Framework to overcome typical integration challenges in data mapping and interface design. It also showcases how the common data model architecture contributes to successful service oriented architecture (SOA) implementation. Finally, it explains which features are critical in selecting data integration tools and platforms, and applies lessons from real-world case studies.

Application Integration Using the SID can be purchased through www.tmforum.org and online at amazon.
