Old school meets new in the battle for the top five board games in new research by consumer review site, www.reevoo.com.

Due to the gloomy weather forecasts for this bank holiday, Reevoo looked at the top games, as rated by shoppers, to keep us all occupied.

It was victory of the classics with Pictionary, Monopoly, Taboo and Uno occupying four out of the top five places. The only ‘modern’ offering to sneak into the list was the Simpsons Chess Set.

Pictionary was the most highly rated game with 9.1/10 and some very positive reviews. Shoppers deemed the game “fun and educational” and “great family entertainment”.

Monopoly Nostalgia edition came in second with an overall score of 9.0/10. It got 9.7/10 in the ‘entertainment value’ category – the highest score out of all the games on the list.

Taboo made it into third place with the same overall score as Monopoly but just lost out in the design/build category. Whilst it still got a lot of positive reviews and 100% of people would recommend it, one shopper commented on the lack of cards which made it “very difficult to continue playing with a surprise factor”.

The only imposter to break up the party for the classic oldies was the Simpsons Chess Set, in at four. Again, it obtained the same overall score as Monopoly and Taboo but consumers marked down its educational value.

And the fifth most highly rated game was Uno. The simple, classic card game from the 1970s held off newbies such as the High School Musical game and Noel’s Deal or No Deal electronic board game. With the same overall score as the Simpsons, Uno was just pipped to the post in the value for money and design and build quality categories.

Chris Winstanley, spokesman for Reevoo commented “We often think that kids want the newest board games and toys, but this research shows that the old favourites are amongst the most popular. Reading impartial reviews, from people who have actually bought and used the product, is the best way to work out what’s going to entertain the family this Bank Holiday.”

1. Pictionary
2. Monopoly Nostalgia
3. Taboo
4. Simpsons Chess Set
5. Uno Extreme

When shoppers buy goods online from any of Reevoo’s 52 retail partners, including Woolworths, Currys, Dixons and the Carphone Warehouse, they are asked to rate their purchases. Their comments – good, bad or indifferent – are then published on both the e-tailers’ websites and on www.reevoo.com.

Shoppers can also keep up-to-date on the latest consumer news and reviews on Reevoo’s blog at www.decidewhattobuy.com.

The former home of King Henry VIII provides the stunning backdrop to one of Anglian Home Improvements most prestigious displays.

Hampton Court Palace hosts Britain’s top flower show, bringing thousands of keen gardeners flocking to Surrey from all over the country.

Organised by the Royal Horticultural Society, and spread over 25 acres it is the largest annual garden show in the world. Last year it attracted 175,000 visitors.

One of its main features is show gardens - where some of the top names in horticulture pit their design skills to gain coveted gold, silver, or bronze medals.

This year Anglian Home Improvements is sponsoring a show garden - with one of its white woodgrain effect conservatories as the main feature.

The garden design bloomed from a competition pitting the skills of nearly 30 third year students at Capel Manor College, Middlesex. The winner is Krista Grindley, who now runs a garden design company, Greenwork Designs.

The challenge was to bring to life Anglian’s advertising claim - that a conservatory brings the garden into the home and extends the home into the garden. It also needed to be low maintenance with a keen emphasis on the environment.

Krista’s response was an eye-catching creation using a combination of black and white tiles, black slate and the white of the Anglian Home Improvements Victorian style conservatory.

“We enlisted the help of Capel Manor as it has Anglian products featured in show gardens at the college” explained Melanie Russell Anglian Home Improvements’ Head of Marketing.

Krista’s design had to appeal to judges from Anglian Home Improvements, the editor of English Garden, and the Hampton Court show manager as well as tutors from Capel Manor.

“Her entry showed such individuality and met the brief in every way. I can’t wait to see her plan transformed into reality”.

“The conservatory is Victorian style utilising black and white floor tiles which were so popular in homes then.

“The tiles lead out from the conservatory and into the garden, where pathways also use black slate. Unusually the public will be able to walk through the garden - a stream is cleverly covered-over with glass, so they can walk on it.

Eye-catching features such as a Victorian fireplace echo the interior of a house.

The environmentally friendly elements of the design include boxes to entice ladybirds and lacewings for natural pest control and plants to attract butterflies and bees. There are several energy saving devices.

This is a garden for entertaining friends and relaxing, whatever the weather.

Capel Manor will assist with the garden creation and planting, while Anglian will provide its own teams to lay paths and assemble the conservatory.

There will be just three weeks to transform a 131 square foot patch of bare earth to a garden chasing one of those coveted medals.

The Hampton Court Palace flower show will be held from July 8 to 13. Tickets can be obtained by calling 0870 906 3791 or visiting www.rhs.org.
